Mountain Village in Autumn - Ōtagaki Rengetsu

Ōtagaki Rengetsu, a Buddhist nun and poet, produced this ink wash painting during the latter part of the Edo period. Her work often reflects the aesthetic principles of the Bunjinga movement, which prioritised personal expression and a connection to nature over rigid technical perfection. This piece captures a rural dwelling nestled against a hillside, rendered with the economy of brushwork characteristic of her style.

The composition relies on the interplay of ink tones, ranging from deep, saturated blacks to diluted grey washes.
