A classic Bunjinga ink painting by Nakabayashi Chikutō, depicting a serene mountain scene with a waterfall and scholar figures.
Nakabayashi Chikutō was a prominent figure in the Bunjinga, or literati, tradition of the Edo period. This movement drew inspiration from Chinese scholar-painters, prioritising personal expression and intellectual engagement over strict realism. In this work, the artist employs a monochromatic ink palette to construct a mountainous scene, typical of the genre's focus on the natural world as a vehicle for philosophical reflection.
The composition follows a vertical format, guiding the eye from the foreground bridge where two figures stand, upward toward the cascading waterfall and the mist-shrouded peaks beyond. Chikutō uses varied ink washes to suggest the texture of rock formations and the density of the forest. The brushwork is deliberate, balancing the soft, atmospheric quality of the clouds with the firmer, darker strokes defining the trees and terrain. The negative space, or blank silk, functions as a vital element of the design, representing the pervasive summer mist that softens the transition between the foreground and the distant mountains.
As a practitioner of the Nanga school, Chikutō sought to capture the spirit of the subject rather than its exact physical appearance. The inclusion of the scholar figures on the bridge provides a sense of scale and human presence, inviting the viewer to participate in the quiet contemplation of the scene. The work reflects the artist's deep study of classical Chinese painting techniques, adapted to the aesthetic sensibilities of nineteenth-century Japan. This print captures the subtle tonal shifts of the original ink work, preserving the balance between the detailed foreground and the ethereal, receding background.
