A detailed Baroque etching by Frans Ertinger depicting the biblical miracle of Moses striking the rock, characterised by dynamic figures and expressive line work.
This etching by Frans Ertinger depicts the biblical narrative of Moses striking the rock to provide water for the Israelites. The composition is divided into two distinct zones. The upper portion features a celestial realm filled with putti and ethereal figures, rendered with fluid, energetic lines that suggest movement and divine presence. Below, the earthly scene captures the dramatic moment of the miracle. Moses stands as the central figure, his gesture directed towards the rock, while the surrounding crowd reacts with a mix of urgency and relief.
Ertinger employs a dense, cross-hatched technique to build form and shadow, typical of the late seventeenth-century printmaking tradition. The inclusion of a decorative urn in the foreground adds a classical element to the scene, grounding the biblical narrative within the aesthetic conventions of the period. The figures are depicted with the elongated proportions and expressive musculature common in Baroque art, reflecting the influence of contemporary painters who favoured dynamic, theatrical compositions.
As a printmaker, Ertinger was known for his ability to translate complex painterly compositions into the medium of etching. This work demonstrates his technical proficiency in managing light and shadow across a crowded scene. The lines remain sharp and deliberate, defining the contours of the figures and the rugged texture of the rocky terrain. The overall effect is one of controlled chaos, where the miraculous event is framed by the structured, decorative elements of the print. This piece offers a clear view into the stylistic priorities of the era, where narrative clarity and technical virtuosity were held in high regard.
