A detailed lithograph by Charles-Abraham Chasselat depicting the final moments of the French physician Mazet in a hospital setting.
This lithograph depicts the final moments of Mazet, a French physician who succumbed to yellow fever while serving in Barcelona. The scene is set within a hospital ward, where the stark, clinical environment contrasts with the emotional weight of the figures gathered around the bedside. Charles-Abraham Chasselat employs a precise, measured line to render the figures, reflecting the disciplined aesthetic of the period.
The composition is structured to focus on the dying man, surrounded by his colleagues who observe his condition with a mixture of professional concern and personal grief. To the left, a kneeling figure in traditional dress provides a religious element, adding a layer of solemnity to the medical setting. The use of lithography allows for subtle tonal gradations, particularly in the rendering of the bed linens and the drapery of the figures' coats.
Chasselat, a student of Percier and Fontaine, was well-versed in the formal requirements of historical documentation. This work functions as a visual record of a specific event, capturing the gravity of the medical profession during the early nineteenth century. The inclusion of the text 'Les médecins français!' beneath the image identifies the subjects as French doctors, situating the narrative within a broader context of international medical aid and sacrifice. The print serves as a historical document, preserving the memory of those who faced epidemic disease in the line of duty. The clean, balanced arrangement of the figures and the clear spatial depth are characteristic of the artist's approach to narrative illustration, prioritising clarity and emotional resonance without resorting to excessive ornamentation.
