A delicate woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai, featuring morning glories and a small tree-frog, rendered in the traditional kachō-ga style.
This woodblock print belongs to a series of large-format flower studies produced by Katsushika Hokusai during the 1830s. Known as kachō-ga, or bird-and-flower pictures, these works demonstrate the artist's focus on natural observation combined with the technical precision of the Edo period printmaking tradition. The composition features morning glories in various stages of bloom, their trumpet-shaped flowers rendered in shades of indigo, pale blue, and muted purple.
The foliage is depicted with a clear, rhythmic quality, using green pigments that contrast against the soft, neutral background of the paper. Hokusai employs a balanced arrangement, allowing the vines to weave across the frame without overcrowding the visual space. The inclusion of the tree-frog, a subtle element within the botanical arrangement, provides a sense of scale and quiet observation.

Katsushika Hokusai was a visionary Japanese artist whose influence stretched far beyond his lifetime.
