A refined 16th-century Japanese painting by Kano Yukinobu, featuring autumn flora and a crescent moon on a gold leaf ground.
This work by Kano Yukinobu, a member of the influential Kano school of painting, presents a fan-shaped composition mounted as a hanging scroll. The imagery depicts an autumn moor, a traditional subject in Japanese art that evokes the changing seasons and the passage of time. The artist employs gold leaf as a ground, which provides a luminous surface for the delicate application of ink and mineral pigments.
To the right, a crescent moon emerges from behind a cloud, its form partially obscured to suggest distance and atmosphere. The foreground features a cluster of autumn grasses and flowers, rendered with precise brushwork that characterises the Kano style. The composition balances the expansive, reflective quality of the gold ground with the controlled, rhythmic placement of the flora. The fan shape itself is a deliberate artistic choice, often used in Japanese painting to create a self-contained world that encourages the viewer to focus on the specific details within the curved frame.
The mounting of the piece includes a dark blue textile border with a repeating floral pattern, which frames the central image and provides a visual contrast to the gold and muted tones of the painting. Kano Yukinobu, active during the mid-16th century, maintained the technical standards of his family lineage while adapting to the aesthetic preferences of the samurai class and the imperial court. This piece reflects the period's interest in nature, where the depiction of specific seasonal plants serves as a poetic reference to the natural world. The work remains a clear example of the decorative yet disciplined approach favoured by the Kano school, where the integration of ink wash techniques and metallic surfaces creates a sense of harmony and refinement.
