A detailed Dutch Baroque etching by Jan Goeree, featuring allegorical figures and memento mori symbols surrounding a commemorative tomb.
This etching by the Dutch artist Jan Goeree serves as a memento mori, a genre common in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries that reminds the viewer of the transient nature of life. The composition features a monumental tomb structure, which acts as the base for an allegorical scene. At the centre, a skeletal figure interacts with a portrait of the deceased, while a winged figure of Time, holding a scythe, hovers to the right. Above, a figure of Death brandishes a spear, reinforcing the inevitability of mortality.
The Latin inscription, 'NON NORVNT HAEC MONVMENTA MORI', translates to 'These monuments do not know death', suggesting that the memory of the individuals persists despite their physical end. The inclusion of dates, 'NAT: II OCT: MDCLXX' and 'OB: IV JANVAR: MDCCXXXI', provides specific biographical markers for the subject, Jonas Witsen. Goeree employs precise, fine-line hatching to create depth and shadow, typical of the period's printmaking techniques. The use of a skull at the base, adorned with wings, is a classic iconographic element used to signify the soul's departure from the earthly realm.
Jan Goeree was a prolific illustrator and engraver based in Amsterdam. His work often involved historical and allegorical subjects, produced for books and commemorative prints. This specific piece demonstrates his technical proficiency in managing complex allegorical arrangements within a confined space. The print reflects the sombre, reflective nature of Dutch funerary art, where the focus remains on the contrast between the permanence of stone monuments and the fragility of human existence. The balanced composition ensures that the viewer's eye moves from the central portrait to the surrounding symbols of mortality, creating a cohesive visual narrative.
