A striking monochrome work by Yves Klein, featuring gold leaf applied to panel to create a textured, light-reflective surface.
Yves Klein, a central figure in post-war European art, produced a series of monochrome works using gold leaf during the late 1950s and early 1960s. This piece belongs to his Monogold series, which explored the physical and metaphysical properties of pure colour. Unlike his famous International Klein Blue (IKB) works, which sought to evoke the infinite void of the sky and sea, the gold panels engage with the history of religious iconography and the material value of the medium itself.
The surface of the panel is covered in thin sheets of gold leaf, applied to create a textured, reflective finish. The application process leaves visible seams and irregularities, which catch the light differently depending on the viewer's position. This physical presence of the material is intentional. Klein wanted to move away from traditional representation, focusing instead on the sensory experience of the viewer. By using gold, a material historically associated with the divine and the eternal, he invites a contemplation of light and space that transcends the physical object.
This work functions as a field of pure light. The texture of the gold leaf creates a subtle, shifting topography across the surface. It does not attempt to depict a subject, but rather presents the material as an autonomous entity. The grid-like structure formed by the overlapping leaves provides a sense of order, yet the crinkled edges of the gold introduce an element of chance and organic variation. It is an exercise in reduction, stripping away narrative to leave only the raw, luminous quality of the gold. The result is an object that occupies the space between painting and sculpture, demanding an immediate, visceral response from the observer.
