This work by Teisai Hokuga depicts two figures traversing a snowy path, captured in the distinct style of the Ukiyo-e school. Hokuga, a student of Katsushika Hokusai, demonstrates a keen eye for the daily lives of itinerant performers and labourers during the Edo period. The composition focuses on a porter, clad in a traditional straw raincoat (mino) and carrying a heavy basket, walking alongside a monkey showman. The showman carries his small primate companion on his back, shielded by a large, open umbrella.
The scene is set against a muted, atmospheric background, where falling snow is rendered with delicate white flecks against a brownish, silk-toned sky. A bird is visible in flight to the left, adding a sense of movement to the otherwise quiet, wintry environment. The figures are rendered with precise, controlled brushwork, typical of the period's focus on characterisation and social observation. The colour palette remains restrained, relying on earthy tones, deep blues, and subtle reds to draw attention to the figures' clothing and accessories.
