This work by Paolo Veronese is a fragment of the fresco cycle executed for the Villa Barbaro in Maser, Italy. The villa, designed by the architect Andrea Palladio, features interior decorations that demonstrate the collaborative synergy between the architect and the painter. Veronese utilised the architectural framework of the villa to create illusionistic spaces, often blurring the boundary between the physical room and the painted scene.
The composition features a monk viewed from behind, his dark habit contrasting with the lighter, architectural elements of the background.
