This portrait study by Alexandre Jacovleff captures three figures with precision and technical control. Executed in 1932 during his travels through East Asia, the work demonstrates the artist's ability to combine academic draughtsmanship with a keen observation of his subjects. Jacovleff, a Russian artist who gained recognition for his extensive travels and ethnographic studies, utilised a combination of sanguine, charcoal, and pastel to render the textures of the subjects' clothing and the specific features of their faces.
The composition is arranged as a group study, with the figures overlapping to create a sense of depth without a formal background. The central figure, dressed in a dark blue robe with visible beadwork, commands the foreground. To the left, a man in a dark cap provides a stoic counterpoint, while the figure to the right, wearing a prominent orange fur hat, adds a warmer tone to the palette. Jacovleff's use of line is deliberate, focusing on the contours of the faces and the folds of the garments. The application of colour is restrained, used primarily to define the textures of the fur and the subtle variations in skin tone.
Jacovleff's work from this period is often associated with his documentation of diverse cultures during the Citroën-sponsored expeditions. He avoided romanticising his subjects, preferring instead to record their appearance with a high degree of naturalism. The artist's signature and the date are visible on the right side of the paper, consistent with his practice of documenting his travels. This print offers a clear view of the artist's technique, showing how he layered dry media to achieve a balance between soft shading and sharp, descriptive lines. It is a representative example of his portraiture, which remains valued for its clarity and observational rigour.
