This woodblock print is part of the series Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido, published by Hoeido. The series documents the journey along the primary road connecting Edo and Kyoto during the Edo period. Hiroshige captures the twenty-eighth station, Mitsuke, situated near the banks of the Tenryu River. The composition focuses on the river crossing, a common necessity for travellers on the Tokaido route.

The foreground features two flat-bottomed boats moored at the riverbank. A boatman stands on the deck, while a passenger sits nearby, both wearing traditional straw hats. The middle ground shows a wide, sandy expanse where other travellers and pack horses wait to board vessels. In the distance, a soft, atmospheric haze obscures the far bank, rendered with a delicate bokashi (gradation) technique that suggests early morning mist or damp air. The muted palette of blues, greys, and earthy tones creates a sense of quietude and stillness.

Hiroshige uses the horizontal format to emphasise the breadth of the river and the scale of the natural environment. The print demonstrates the artist's skill in managing spatial depth through the layering of figures and the transition from the sharp, clear foreground to the blurred, ethereal background. The inclusion of the Tenryu River, known for its swift currents, adds a layer of narrative context to the scene, as the crossing was often a point of delay or anticipation for those travelling the Tokaido.
