A woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicting travellers on oxen at the Mishima station of the Tokaido road.
This woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicts a scene from the Mishima station of the Tokaido road. The composition features two figures riding oxen, moving through a rural setting. Hokusai employs a balanced use of line and colour, characteristic of his early nineteenth-century output. The figures, rendered with expressive facial features, are positioned beneath a stylised pine tree, which provides a sense of place and scale to the composition.
The Tokaido road was a popular subject for artists of the Edo period, as it served as the primary route between Edo and Kyoto. Hokusai, known for his keen observation of daily life, captures a moment of travel that reflects the social atmosphere of the time. The inclusion of calligraphic text within the print adds a layer of narrative context, common in ukiyo-e works where poetry and image share the pictorial space. The print demonstrates Hokusai's ability to combine human interest with the natural environment, creating a scene that is both observational and decorative.
Technically, the print exhibits the refined woodblock carving skills of the period. The colour palette is restrained, relying on muted tones to define the forms of the oxen and the clothing of the travellers. The composition is relatively flat, typical of the ukiyo-e style, which prioritises clear outlines and decorative patterns over the illusion of deep space. This work offers a glimpse into the travel culture of Japan during the Edo period, presented through the distinct aesthetic lens of one of the most recognised figures in Japanese art history.
