A dramatic historical drawing by Jacobus Buys depicting the 1572 massacre at Naarden, rendered in pen and ink with grey wash.
This drawing by Jacobus Buys depicts a harrowing episode from the Eighty Years' War, specifically the massacre at Naarden on 1 December 1572. The scene captures the violent treatment of the son of the scholar Hortensius by Spanish soldiers. Buys, a Dutch artist active during the late eighteenth century, employs a controlled use of ink and grey wash to render the dramatic tension within the interior setting. The composition focuses on the central figures, where a soldier kneels over the victim while others stand by with weapons drawn. To the right, the figure of the scholar Hortensius is shown in a gesture of distress, his posture conveying the gravity of the situation.
Buys was known for his contributions to historical illustration, often documenting events from Dutch history with a focus on narrative clarity. His technique relies on precise line work to define the figures and their period-appropriate attire, such as the ruffs and doublets of the sixteenth century. The wash provides a sense of volume and depth, grounding the figures within the room. This work belongs to a tradition of Dutch historical art that sought to preserve the memory of national struggles through visual storytelling. The artist avoids excessive ornamentation, allowing the emotional weight of the subject matter to remain the primary focus for the viewer. As a study or preparatory work, it offers a glimpse into the artist's process of constructing complex historical scenes, balancing the chaotic nature of the event with a structured, classical arrangement of figures.
