A detailed 17th-century Flemish engraving by Theodoor Galle depicting a miraculous rescue, rendered with precise line work and religious narrative focus.
This engraving by Theodoor Galle depicts a narrative scene from the hagiographic tradition, specifically illustrating a miracle associated with the Rosary. The composition is divided into distinct zones: the foreground features the dramatic encounter between the figures and the wolves, while the background provides a rural setting with a church and distant buildings. Above, a celestial apparition of the Virgin Mary appears within a cloud formation, casting light upon the scene below.
The print is executed with the precise line work characteristic of the Galle family, a prominent dynasty of engravers and publishers in Antwerp. The technique relies on cross-hatching and varied line weights to define the forms of the figures, the animals, and the surrounding terrain. The inclusion of Latin text at the top and bottom of the plate serves to identify the subject matter and provide the moral or theological context for the viewer. This format was common in devotional prints of the period, which functioned as visual aids for religious instruction.
Theodoor Galle, trained by his father Philips Galle, was active during a period when Antwerp remained a centre for the production of high-quality prints. His work often reflects the influence of contemporary Flemish painters and the stylistic conventions of the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. The figures are rendered with a degree of theatricality, typical of the Mannerist style, which prioritises narrative clarity and symbolic representation over strict anatomical realism. The engraving demonstrates the technical proficiency required to translate complex theological narratives into a medium suitable for wide distribution. By combining text and image, the work functions as a portable sermon, intended to encourage piety through the depiction of divine intervention in the face of mortal danger.
