A detailed engraving by Jan Harmensz. Muller depicting the mythological scene of Minerva and Mercury preparing Perseus for his quest.
This engraving by Jan Harmensz. Muller depicts the classical myth of Perseus preparing for his encounter with Medusa. Minerva, the goddess of wisdom, and Mercury, the messenger god, assist the hero by providing him with the necessary equipment for his quest. Minerva holds a reflective shield, while Mercury kneels, offering guidance. The composition is characteristic of the Northern Mannerist style, which prioritises elongated figures, complex poses, and a high degree of technical artifice.
Muller was a prominent figure in the Haarlem school of printmaking. His work often displays a mastery of the burin, allowing for a wide range of tonal values and textures. The figures are muscular and dynamic, occupying a space that feels both theatrical and dense. The background includes a river god and other figures, adding layers of narrative detail to the scene. The play of light across the polished surface of the shield and the folds of the drapery demonstrates the technical precision required for such a work.
As a printmaker, Muller was known for his ability to translate the dramatic compositions of painters into the medium of engraving. This piece reflects the interest in classical antiquity that permeated European art during the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. The attention to anatomical detail and the dramatic interaction between the figures create a sense of urgency. The print is a fine example of the sophisticated graphic arts produced in the Netherlands during this period, showcasing the skill involved in creating depth and volume through line work alone.
