A formal group portrait of the Dutch naval commander Michiel de Ruyter and his family, painted in 1662.
This large-scale group portrait depicts the family of the Dutch naval hero Michiel Adriaenszoon de Ruyter. Painted in 1662, the work captures the admiral alongside his wife, Anna van Gelder, and their children in an outdoor setting. The composition follows the conventions of seventeenth-century Dutch portraiture, where the status of the sitter is communicated through attire, posture, and the inclusion of symbolic elements. De Ruyter is shown with a baton, a reference to his command, while the presence of hunting dogs and birds suggests the leisure activities of the Dutch elite.
Juriaen Jacobsz. employs a theatrical arrangement, placing the figures against a backdrop of classical architecture and foliage. The lighting is directed to draw attention to the faces and the textures of the clothing, from the stiff white collars to the heavy silk skirts. The children are integrated into the scene through various activities, such as holding flowers or interacting with the animals, which adds a sense of domestic narrative to the formal arrangement. The palette is dominated by dark, muted tones, which contrast with the bright highlights on the lace and the red fabric of the garments.
This painting is a representative example of the portraiture commissioned by the successful merchant and military classes of the Dutch Republic. It functions as a record of familial identity and social standing. The artist, a pupil of Frans Snyders, demonstrates a high level of technical skill in the rendering of fabrics and the naturalistic depiction of the animals. The work remains a significant document of the period, providing insight into the domestic lives of those who held positions of power during the Dutch Golden Age.
