Giorgio de Chirico, a central figure in the development of Metaphysical Art, produced this work in 1971. The painting belongs to his later period, where he revisited the themes and motifs that defined his earlier career. The composition features a claustrophobic interior space, a hallmark of his style, where the boundaries between reality and artifice blur. A central structure, resembling a collection of wooden frames or architectural fragments, dominates the room. Within this structure, a dark, organic shape rises, contrasting with the geometric precision of the surrounding elements.
To the left, a window reveals a sun with wavy, radiating beams, while a crescent moon appears through a window on the right. This juxtaposition of celestial bodies creates a sense of temporal confusion, typical of de Chirico's interest in dream-like states and the suspension of time. The floorboards are rendered with a forced perspective, drawing the eye toward the central assemblage. The palette consists of earthy tones, ochres, and blues, which ground the otherwise irrational arrangement of objects.
De Chirico often employed these interiors to explore the concept of the 'picture within a picture', questioning the nature of representation itself. By placing a sun and moon within the same domestic setting, he removes them from their natural context, transforming them into symbolic objects. The thin, deliberate lines and the flattened depth of the room contribute to a sense of theatricality. This work reflects the artist's return to his earlier metaphysical vocabulary, reinterpreting his own history through a lens of mature reflection.
