A classical etching by Simone Cantarini depicting the mythological encounter between Mercury and the giant Argus.
This etching by Simone Cantarini depicts a scene from Ovid's Metamorphoses, where the god Mercury lulls the hundred-eyed giant Argus to sleep with the music of his flute. Cantarini, a student of Guido Reni, demonstrates his mastery of the etching medium through fluid, rhythmic lines that define both the figures and the surrounding environment. The composition is balanced, with Mercury seated upon a stone block, his posture relaxed as he plays the instrument, while Argus reclines on the ground, his attention captured by the melody.
The artist employs a clear, classical approach to the human form, reflecting the influence of the Bolognese school. The shading is achieved through varied hatching techniques, which provide volume to the musculature of the figures and depth to the foliage. The inclusion of the dog and the distant cow adds a pastoral quality to the mythological narrative. Cantarini's work is characterised by a sense of calm, contrasting with the dramatic tension inherent in the original myth, where Mercury is tasked with killing the giant once he falls into a deep slumber.
As a printmaker, Cantarini was known for his ability to translate the grace of his drawings into the etched line. This piece captures the narrative focus of the Baroque period, prioritising the psychological interaction between the two characters. The print remains a fine example of seventeenth-century Italian graphic art, showing the technical precision and narrative clarity that defined the artist's career. The work is presented here as a high-quality fine art print, preserving the original tonal qualities and the delicate nature of the etched marks found in the original impression.
