A detailed eighteenth-century etching by Gaspard Duchange depicting the arrival of enslaved people at a fortified port.
This etching and engraving, titled Menez en Esclavage, depicts a scene of human trafficking at a coastal port. The composition centres on a group of enslaved individuals being led from a ship onto a stone quay. The artist employs precise line work to define the architectural features of the harbour, including the fortified towers and the rigging of the vessel anchored in the background. The figures are rendered with a focus on their physical vulnerability, contrasting with the rigid, imposing structures of the port.
Gaspard Duchange, a skilled French engraver, captures the atmospheric conditions of the harbour through varied cross-hatching and tonal depth. The scene is presented with a documentary quality, typical of eighteenth-century printmaking, which often sought to record contemporary events or social conditions. The foreground features small boats and figures engaged in the process of disembarkation, while the background provides a wider view of the maritime setting. The work serves as a historical record of the transatlantic slave trade, documenting the mechanics of the system through the medium of print.
As a museum-grade fine art print, this piece offers a clear view of the technical proficiency of the period. The use of line and shadow creates a sense of spatial depth, drawing the eye from the water towards the shore. The print is presented in its original orientation, maintaining the integrity of the artist's composition. This work is suitable for those interested in the history of maritime trade, the visual culture of the eighteenth century, and the development of European printmaking techniques.
