Beskrivning
A delicate woodcut by Lucien Pissarro depicting a girl harvesting fruit, reflecting the artist's work with the Eragny Press.
This woodcut by Lucien Pissarro, titled Meisje appels plukkend, demonstrates the artist's engagement with the revival of traditional printmaking techniques. Pissarro, the eldest son of Camille Pissarro, moved to London in 1890 and became a significant figure in the private press movement. He founded the Eragny Press, where he produced books that integrated typography with wood-engraved illustrations.
The composition features a young girl reaching upward to harvest fruit from a tree. The vertical orientation of the work is characteristic of his book illustrations, which were designed to harmonise with the printed page. Pissarro employs a simplified, graphic approach, using clear outlines and a restricted tonal range to define the figure and the surrounding foliage. The background is filled with stylised leaves and fruit, creating a decorative frame around the central subject.
Unlike the pointillist oil paintings associated with his father and his own early career, this work shows a shift toward a more linear and rhythmic style. The influence of Japanese woodblock prints is evident in the flat treatment of space and the deliberate placement of forms. Pissarro's approach to the woodcut medium prioritised the physical qualities of the block, often leaving visible marks that add texture to the final print. This piece reflects his interest in the synthesis of text and image, a core principle of his work at the Eragny Press. The print is a study in balance, where the figure's posture mirrors the curve of the tree, creating a sense of unity within the narrow frame. It remains a representative example of the aesthetic values held by the British private press movement at the turn of the century.
