A study of the Mater Dolorosa by Dutch artist Woutherus Mol, rendered in black chalk with white heightening to capture a moment of quiet grief.
This study of the Mater Dolorosa by the Dutch painter Woutherus Mol captures a moment of quiet grief. Mol, who trained in Paris under Jacques-Louis David, brought a rigorous approach to form and anatomy to his work. This drawing demonstrates his technical skill in handling black chalk, using subtle gradations to model the features of the Virgin Mary. The application of white heightening adds a sense of volume to the drapery and the hands, which are crossed in a gesture of resignation.
The composition focuses on the internal state of the subject. Her head is bowed, and her eyes are closed, directing the viewer to the emotional weight of the figure rather than external narrative elements. The background remains largely unworked, allowing the focus to stay on the facial expression and the posture of the hands. Such studies were common in the nineteenth century, serving as preparatory exercises for larger religious commissions or as independent works intended for private contemplation.
Mol was known for his attention to historical accuracy and his adherence to the principles of the French school. His work often reflects the restrained emotional palette characteristic of the period. The paper shows signs of age, including minor foxing and discolouration, which provide a sense of the object's history. This print reproduces the textures of the original chalk marks, preserving the artist's hand and the specific pressure applied to the paper. It is a piece that rewards close observation, revealing the careful construction of light and shadow that defines Mol's draughtsmanship. The work remains a clear example of the academic tradition in the Netherlands during the early nineteenth century, where the study of the human figure remained the primary concern for any serious artist.
