Beskrivning

A powerful 1918 oil painting by George Bellows depicting the civilian suffering in Dinant during the First World War.

George Bellows produced Massacre at Dinant in 1918, a period when the United States was actively involved in the First World War. The painting depicts the atrocities committed by German forces in the Belgian town of Dinant during the initial invasion of 1914. Bellows, a member of the Ashcan School known for his gritty urban realism, turned his attention to the horrors of conflict, drawing inspiration from reports and photographs of the period.

The composition is structured to maximise the emotional impact of the scene. On the left, a nun stands in a white habit, her arms raised in a gesture of despair or prayer, while a bayonet enters the frame from the extreme edge. The centre of the canvas is occupied by a group of civilians, their postures conveying varying degrees of terror, resignation, and grief. Some figures cover their eyes, while others are collapsed on the ground, suggesting the immediate aftermath of violence. Bellows employs a dark, moody sky that contrasts with the lighter, more exposed figures, creating a sense of impending doom.

The painting is not a direct eyewitness account, as Bellows did not travel to the front. Instead, it is a constructed narrative intended to evoke the moral outrage felt by many Americans regarding the treatment of civilians in occupied territories. The brushwork is expressive and direct, typical of Bellows's approach to large-scale canvases. The palette is dominated by deep blues, blacks, and muted earth tones, which serve to ground the scene in a sombre reality. By focusing on the vulnerability of the figures, Bellows creates a work that addresses the human cost of war rather than the glory of combat. It remains a significant example of American art responding to the geopolitical crises of the early twentieth century.

Artist Biography

George Bellows

Bellows was six foot two and good enough at baseball to attract interest from the Cincinnati Reds. He chose painting instead, moved to New York in 1904, and studied under Robert Henri at the New York School of Art. Henri taught that art should engage with the messy reality of American life, not retreat into academic prettiness. Bellows took the instruction further than anyone in the group.

He painted boxing matches at Tom Sharkey's saloon, an illegal club near the Brooklyn waterfront where bare-knuckle fights happened in a back room. Stag at Sharkey's, painted in 1909 when he was twenty-six, shows two fighters locked together under electric light, the crowd surging at the edges of the canvas. The paint is applied with a violence that matches the subject.

He was the youngest artist associated with the Ashcan School and the boldest. While other members painted park benches and tenement laundry lines, Bellows painted excavation sites, shipyards, snow-covered lots, and river swimmers. The compositions are physically large, thickly painted, and arranged with an energy that makes the viewer feel as though the scene is still happening.

He worked as a newspaper sports illustrator to pay the bills, and the events he covered became paintings. In 1923 he was at the Polo Grounds on assignment for the New York Evening Journal when Luis Firpo knocked Jack Dempsey out of the ring and nearly into his lap. The painting he made of the moment reversed the punch to a left hook because the composition worked better that way. Accuracy was less important than impact.

He died of a ruptured appendix in 1925, at forty-two.
