A formal portrait engraving of Mary II of England by French artist Étienne Johandier Desrochers, featuring royal iconography and period attire.
This engraving by Étienne Johandier Desrochers depicts Mary II of England, who reigned alongside her husband, William III, following the Glorious Revolution of 1688. The portrait is executed in the formal style characteristic of early eighteenth-century French printmaking. Desrochers, a prolific engraver based in Paris, often produced series of royal and aristocratic portraits that circulated throughout Europe.
The composition employs a classic oval frame, a common device in portraiture of the period to focus attention on the sitter. Mary II is shown in three-quarter view, wearing pearls and lace, which denote her status and the fashion of the late seventeenth century. Below the portrait, the artist includes a heraldic shield and a sceptre, symbols of her royal authority. The inclusion of the crown resting on the ledge further reinforces her position as monarch. The background features a cross-hatched texture, providing a subtle contrast to the smooth rendering of the subject's features and the ornate decorative elements of the frame.
Desrochers often worked from paintings by other artists, as indicated by the inscription 'Vander Werff pinxit' at the base of the print, referring to the Dutch painter Adriaen van der Werff. This collaborative process between painter and engraver was standard practice for disseminating royal imagery across borders. The technical precision of the line work, particularly in the rendering of the lace and the metallic sheen of the crown, demonstrates the high level of skill required for copperplate engraving. This print offers a clear view into the visual language of European monarchy, where portraiture functioned as a primary tool for establishing and maintaining the public image of a sovereign.
