A detailed tempera and gold leaf panel depicting the martyrdom of Saint Lawrence, accompanied by two praying Benedictine nuns.
This panel painting by Jacobello del Fiore depicts the martyrdom of Saint Lawrence, a subject common in early fifteenth-century Venetian art. The composition follows a narrative structure, placing the saint upon a gridiron amidst flames. His posture, with his torso raised and gaze directed toward the heavens, conveys a sense of spiritual composure despite the physical torment. Above him, a representation of the divine appears within a cloud, reinforcing the religious context of the scene.
To the left, two Benedictine nuns are shown in prayer, their presence suggesting they were the patrons or the intended audience for this devotional work. Their inclusion provides a scale contrast to the central figure of the saint. To the right, two executioners attend to the fire, their figures rendered with the stylistic conventions of the period, including distinct garments and tools of their trade. The use of gold leaf for the background is a hallmark of the International Gothic style, creating a flat, non-naturalistic space that emphasises the symbolic nature of the event rather than a realistic setting.
Jacobello del Fiore was a prominent figure in the Venetian school during the transition from the Trecento to the Quattrocento. His work often combines the decorative qualities of the Gothic tradition with an increasing interest in narrative clarity. The inclusion of Latin inscriptions on scrolls, which wind through the composition, serves to identify the figures and provide theological context for the viewer. The painting demonstrates the technical precision required for tempera application on wood, with fine details visible in the facial features and the rendering of the flames. This piece offers a clear view into the devotional practices and artistic priorities of the early Venetian Renaissance, where religious iconography remained the primary focus for both artists and their patrons.
