Beskrivning
A modernist study of the French town of Martigues, featuring simplified forms and a deep, atmospheric colour palette.
André Derain painted this work during his time in the southern French town of Martigues. By 1908, his approach to colour and form had shifted from the explosive, non-naturalistic hues of his earlier Fauvist period toward a more structured, analytical style. This transition reflects the influence of Paul Cézanne, whose work Derain studied closely during this era.
The composition is defined by simplified, geometric shapes and a restricted palette. Deep blues, dark greens, and earthy tones dominate the scene, providing a stark contrast to the bright, warm orange of the roof tiles. The vertical trunks of the trees in the foreground frame the view, creating a sense of depth while maintaining a flattened, decorative quality. The hills in the background are reduced to broad, sweeping planes, avoiding unnecessary detail to focus on the essential structure of the terrain.
Derain uses paint application to define the weight and volume of the objects. The brushwork is deliberate, moving away from the spontaneous, broken strokes of his earlier career. This piece captures the quiet, atmospheric quality of the Mediterranean coast, stripped of the busy detail found in traditional representational art. It is a study in balance, where the cool tones of the water and sky interact with the solid, grounded forms of the architecture and vegetation. The work demonstrates the artist's move toward a more disciplined, formalised visual language that would characterise his output in the years following the peak of the Fauve movement.

Artist Biography
Andre Derain
He was born in Chatou in 1880 and had originally studied to become an engineer. He met Matisse in 1898 while attending painting classes under Eugene Carriere. The Fauvist paintings are explosions of unnatural colour: trees in orange, water in violet, shadows in green. They were among the most radical works produced in Paris at the turn of the century.
By 1908, Derain was already breaking with the style. He turned to Cezanne, then passed through a Cubist phase, and by the 1920s had arrived at a fully Neoclassical manner. The wildest of the Fauves became one of the most conservative painters in France. The conservative turn brought financial success and mainstream praise. During the Second World War, the Nazis approved of his Neoclassical work. After the war, he was unjustly accused of collaboration. His reputation never fully recovered. He died in 1954.
