A masterful 1585 engraving by Hendrick Goltzius depicting the mythological discovery of Mars and Venus, showcasing the technical precision of Northern Mannerism.
This engraving by Hendrick Goltzius, dated 1585, depicts the classical myth of Mars and Venus caught in an illicit embrace. The composition is based on a design by Bartholomeus Spranger, a painter who exerted considerable influence on the Haarlem school of Mannerism. Goltzius demonstrates his technical mastery through the use of swelling lines, a technique he developed to create volume and texture within the figures and the surrounding drapery.
The scene captures the moment of discovery. Mars and Venus are positioned centrally on a bed, while putti pull back the heavy curtains to reveal the lovers. In the background, the sun god Phoebus Apollo drives his chariot across the sky, acting as the witness who exposes the affair. The foreground includes the discarded armour of Mars, specifically his helmet and shield, which provide a narrative link to the god of war. The Latin inscription at the base of the print provides further context, referencing the inevitability of truth being brought to light.
Goltzius was a central figure in the Dutch Mannerist movement, known for his ability to translate the complex, elongated forms of painters like Spranger into the medium of print. The work is characterised by its dramatic lighting, muscular anatomy, and the theatrical arrangement of the figures. The interplay of shadow and light across the bodies of the gods creates a sense of depth and physical presence. This print is a prime example of the sophisticated, intellectual art produced in the Netherlands during the late sixteenth century, reflecting a fascination with classical antiquity and the expressive potential of the human form.
