A 1620 etching by Giovanni Battista Mercati depicting the mystical marriage of Saint Catherine, based on a composition by Correggio.
This etching by Giovanni Battista Mercati, dated 1620, depicts the mystical marriage of Saint Catherine of Alexandria. The composition centres on the Virgin Mary, who holds the Christ Child on her lap. The infant Jesus reaches out to place a ring upon the finger of Saint Catherine, who kneels to his right. A palm frond, the traditional attribute of martyrdom, rests against her shoulder, while a sword lies on the ground before her, referencing the instrument of her death.
Mercati, an Italian artist active during the early seventeenth century, produced this work as a reproduction of a composition by Antonio da Correggio. The etching demonstrates the technical skill of the period, utilising varied line weights to define the folds of drapery and the soft contours of the figures. The background features a simplified landscape, providing a sense of space without distracting from the primary narrative.
At the base of the print, an inscription dedicated to Lelio Guidiccioni provides context for the work, noting the artist's intention to multiply the representation of such a subject through the medium of printmaking. The etching reflects the influence of the High Renaissance masters on Baroque printmakers, who sought to disseminate classical compositions to a wider audience. The use of cross-hatching and delicate line work creates a sense of volume and texture, particularly in the garments worn by the figures. This print serves as a record of the artistic dialogue between the sixteenth-century masters and their seventeenth-century interpreters, capturing a moment of quiet devotion through precise, controlled mark-making.
