A refined 1825 portrait by Thomas Sully, capturing Marie Oldmixon in a wide-brimmed hat with a green ribbon.
Thomas Sully, a prominent figure in nineteenth-century American portraiture, painted this work in 1825. The subject is Marie Oldmixon, who was married to George Lingen. Sully was known for his ability to capture the grace and poise of his sitters, often employing a soft, fluid brushwork that aligns with the Romantic sensibilities of the era.
In this oval composition, the sitter is depicted in a three-quarter view, wearing a wide-brimmed hat adorned with a distinctive green ribbon. The choice of attire and the gentle tilt of her head suggest a relaxed yet formal engagement with the viewer. Sully uses a muted colour palette, allowing the subtle tones of the subject's dress and the dark background to create a sense of depth. The lighting is focused on the face, drawing attention to her expression and the delicate features rendered with precision.
Sully's technique here reflects his training and his exposure to the works of British portraitists, particularly Sir Thomas Lawrence. He avoids excessive detail, preferring to suggest textures through light and shadow. The oval format, a common choice for portraiture during this period, frames the subject tightly, concentrating the viewer's attention on the personality and presence of Mrs. Lingen. This piece provides a clear example of the portrait style that defined the upper-middle-class aesthetic in the early nineteenth century. The work remains a representative example of Sully's output, demonstrating his technical proficiency and his approach to capturing the likeness of his contemporaries.
