A formal portrait of Maria Louisa van Hessen-Kassel, regent of the Netherlands, rendered in the traditional style of eighteenth-century court painting.
This portrait depicts Maria Louisa van Hessen-Kassel, a figure of significant political influence in the eighteenth-century Netherlands. Known affectionately as Maaike-Meu, she served as the regent for her son, William IV, Prince of Orange, following the untimely death of her husband, Johan Willem Friso. Johann Philipp Behr captures her in a formal pose, reflecting the conventions of court portraiture during the period.
The subject wears a gown of pale, patterned fabric, adorned with delicate lace at the neckline. A heavy red cloak, lined with ermine fur and fastened with jewelled brooches, rests over her shoulders. This garment signifies her status as a member of the House of Orange-Nassau. Her hair is styled in the fashion of the era, decorated with small ornaments that catch the light. The artist employs a dark, neutral background, which directs the viewer's attention to the subject's face and the textures of her attire.
Behr focuses on the physical presence of the sitter, using a controlled application of paint to define the folds of the fabric and the soft contours of her features. The lighting is directed from the left, creating subtle shadows that provide volume to the figure. This work provides a record of the appearance and status of a woman who navigated the complexities of Dutch politics during a period of transition. The composition follows the standard format for aristocratic portraiture, balancing the display of wealth with a sense of individual character. The inclusion of ermine and velvet serves as a visual shorthand for her rank, while the direct gaze of the sitter establishes a connection with the viewer. This print offers a clear reproduction of the original oil painting, preserving the tonal range and the specific details of the sitter's costume.
