A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Nishimura Shigenaga, featuring mandarin ducks and irises from the Kashinsai series.
This woodblock print by Nishimura Shigenaga depicts a pair of mandarin ducks resting near a stream, framed by tall irises. Shigenaga was a significant figure in the early development of Ukiyo-e, operating his own publishing house in Edo. His work often explored the kacho-ga genre, which focuses on birds and flowers. This specific piece belongs to the Kashinsai series, demonstrating his skill in balancing natural observation with the stylistic conventions of the period.
The composition employs a vertical format, common in early Japanese prints. The ducks are positioned on a rocky outcrop, their forms rendered with precise, controlled lines. The irises rise behind them, their elongated leaves and petals creating a sense of verticality that contrasts with the horizontal ripples of the water. The colour palette is restrained, relying on earthy tones and subtle washes that have aged into a warm, muted patina.
Shigenaga was known for his experimentation with print techniques, including early attempts at colour printing before the full development of nishiki-e. The lines are thin and deliberate, characteristic of the hand-coloured or early block-printed works of the mid-18th century. The print captures a quiet moment in nature, reflecting the aesthetic values of the Edo period where the observation of seasonal changes held cultural weight. The inclusion of the series title in the upper right and the artist's signature in the lower right provides clear provenance for this work. It remains a representative example of the technical and stylistic transition occurring within the Ukiyo-e school during the 1740s.
