A refined Ming Dynasty bird-and-flower painting by Lü Ji, featuring mandarin ducks and hibiscus blossoms rendered in ink and colour on silk.
This work by Lü Ji, a court painter during the Ming Dynasty, exemplifies the bird-and-flower genre that flourished under imperial patronage. The composition balances the verticality of a weathered rock formation against the horizontal movement of the water and the ducks. Lü Ji employs a meticulous technique, using fine brushwork to define the plumage of the birds and the delicate petals of the hibiscus flowers. The muted, aged tones of the silk provide a neutral backdrop, allowing the subtle colouration of the ducks and the white blossoms to emerge with clarity.
Lü Ji was active in the imperial court, where his work was valued for its technical precision and adherence to traditional aesthetics. The painting follows the conventions of the Zhe School, which favoured a decorative yet naturalistic approach. The inclusion of the cotton rose hibiscus and the mandarin ducks carries symbolic weight, as these subjects are traditional motifs representing marital fidelity and seasonal change. The rock, rendered with heavy, dark ink washes, provides a structural anchor for the lighter, more detailed elements of the flora and fauna.
This print captures the atmospheric quality of the original silk surface. The arrangement of the elements creates a sense of quiet observation, typical of the period's focus on the natural world. By focusing on the interaction between the birds and their environment, the artist creates a scene that feels both composed and spontaneous. The work remains a representative example of the high level of craftsmanship expected from painters serving the Ming court, where the observation of nature was refined through centuries of artistic tradition.
