Beskrivning

A study of a labourer at work, rendered in earthy tones with direct, expressive brushwork characteristic of Van Gogh's early period in The Hague.

This work, produced during Vincent van Gogh's time in The Hague, captures a labourer in a moment of physical exertion. The artist focused on the raw, unvarnished reality of manual work, a subject that occupied much of his attention during this period. The figure is bent low, his body angled to accommodate the task of digging or clearing the earth. Van Gogh used a muted, earthy palette to convey the connection between the worker and the soil, prioritising the weight and texture of the scene over fine detail.

The brushwork is direct and purposeful. Rather than seeking a polished finish, the artist applied paint in broad, visible strokes that define the form of the man and the uneven ground. The light, though diffused, creates a sense of atmosphere, casting the figure in a silhouette that emphasises his posture. This study reflects the artist's early interest in the lives of peasants and labourers, a theme he would return to throughout his career. By stripping away extraneous detail, he directed the viewer's attention to the repetitive, demanding nature of the task at hand.

Van Gogh's approach here demonstrates his developing ability to use colour and form to evoke a specific mood. The ochre and brown tones ground the image in the physical environment, while the cooler blue-grey of the worker's shirt provides a subtle contrast. This piece offers a glimpse into the artist's formative years, showing his transition from drawing to painting and his growing mastery of composition. It is a study of human effort, rendered with a focus on the tactile qualities of the medium and the dignity found in everyday labour.

Artist Biography

Vincent Van Gogh

Van Gogh did not start painting until he was twenty-seven. Before that he tried being an art dealer (fired), a schoolteacher (quit), a bookshop assistant (quit), and a preacher in a Belgian mining town (dismissed for excessive zeal, which in this context meant giving away his clothes and sleeping on the floor). He had a pattern of total commitment followed by total collapse.

He taught himself to draw by copying prints and working through textbooks. His brother Theo, an art dealer in Paris, sent money every month for the rest of Vincent's life. Without Theo there are no paintings. The letters between them, over 600, are one of the most complete records of any artist's thinking. Van Gogh wrote about colour theory, composition, what he ate, what he read, how much he spent on paint. He was articulate and well-read and not, despite the popular version, simply mad.

He moved to Paris in 1886 and encountered Impressionism. The palette changed immediately: from the dark browns of his Dutch period to the colours people actually associate with his work. He met Gauguin, Pissarro, Signac, Toulouse-Lautrec. He absorbed Pointillism and Japanese prints. Then he moved to Arles in the south of France, where the light was better and people were fewer.

The Arles period produced Sunflowers, The Bedroom, Starry Night Over the Rhone. The breakdown followed: the argument with Gauguin, the severed ear (he cut part of his left ear, not the whole thing), the asylum at Saint-Remy, and then Auvers-sur-Oise, where he painted seventy canvases in seventy days before dying from a gunshot wound at thirty-seven. He sold one painting during his lifetime, or possibly two. Theo died six months later.
