A detailed 1881 watercolour by Franz Skarbina, depicting a man in seventeenth-century costume raising a glass in a celebratory gesture.
This watercolour by Franz Skarbina, dated 1881, depicts a male figure dressed in historical attire reminiscent of the Louis XIII period. The subject stands in a three-quarter pose, his body turned slightly to the right, while he holds a glass of wine aloft in a gesture of celebration. Skarbina, a German painter associated with the Berlin Secession, demonstrates his technical proficiency in this work through the careful handling of light and shadow.
The figure wears a doublet adorned with ribbons, dark breeches, and tall leather boots. The lace collar adds a refined detail to the costume, which is rendered with a focus on texture and historical accuracy. A prominent shadow is cast against the plain, neutral background, providing a sense of volume and physical presence to the standing man. The artist uses a muted colour palette, allowing the subtle tones of the clothing and the pale yellow of the wine to draw the viewer's attention.
Skarbina was known for his interest in historical subjects and his ability to capture the nuances of human expression. In this piece, the man's gaze and the slight tilt of his head suggest a moment of social interaction or a theatrical performance. The work reflects the academic training of the period, combined with a personal approach to watercolour that prioritises clarity and form. The signature and date are clearly visible in the lower right corner, confirming the provenance of the piece to the early phase of Skarbina's career. This print offers an opportunity to observe the artist's attention to period detail and his command of the medium, providing a clear window into the aesthetic preferences of late nineteenth-century European art.
