A 1889 Dutch lithograph depicting a man in reflection as roses fall from above, symbolising the memory of youth.
This lithograph, produced by the Dutch firm Samuel Lankhout & Co in 1889, presents a scene of quiet contemplation. A bearded man sits at a table, his hand placed against his chest in a gesture of reflection. Above him, a disembodied hand scatters roses, accompanied by the word 'JEUGD', which translates from Dutch as 'Youth'. The inclusion of the word 'HERINNERING' (Memory) at the base of the print clarifies the allegorical nature of the image. It depicts the intersection of past and present, where the memory of youth descends upon the subject like falling petals.
The composition employs a delicate, linear style characteristic of late nineteenth-century commercial lithography. The artist uses fine hatching to define the textures of the man's clothing, the tablecloth, and the surrounding space. A small statuette and a framed picture on the wall, labelled 'LUGDUNI', provide specific environmental details that ground the scene in a domestic or scholarly setting. The light, airy quality of the falling roses contrasts with the solid, seated figure, creating a sense of ethereal movement within a static interior.
Samuel Lankhout & Co operated as a prominent printing house in The Hague, known for their technical proficiency in lithographic reproduction. This work reflects the period's interest in sentimental and symbolic themes, often found in contemporary periodicals or commemorative prints. The print captures a moment of introspection, using visual metaphor to explore the passage of time and the persistence of memory. The technical execution demonstrates the firm's ability to balance narrative clarity with the soft, tonal qualities inherent to the lithographic medium. It remains a curious example of Dutch graphic arts from the late 1880s, offering a glimpse into the visual language of the era.
