A detailed photochrom print by William Henry Jackson, capturing the travertine terraces of Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone National Park.
This image captures the geological formations of Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone National Park. Produced as a photochrom, the work utilises a lithographic process to add colour to a black and white photographic negative. William Henry Jackson, a photographer who documented the American West, provides a clear view of the travertine terraces. The foreground displays the mineral deposits, which exhibit shades of ochre, rust, and white. These terraces descend toward the valley floor, where the structures of the Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel are visible. The composition balances the natural geological features with the human presence in the distance. The background features the mountain ranges typical of the Wyoming region, rendered with a soft atmospheric perspective.
Jackson was instrumental in the documentation of the American frontier. His work often served to inform the public about the unique geography of the national parks. The photochrom process, popularised by the Detroit Photographic Company, allowed for the mass production of these images, bringing the appearance of natural colour to a wide audience during the late nineteenth century. The clarity of the image allows for an examination of the mineral layers and the surrounding vegetation. This print provides a record of the park as it appeared at the turn of the century, documenting both the natural state of the springs and the early development of tourist infrastructure in the area. The technical precision of the photochrom process ensures that the textures of the rock formations remain distinct, while the colour application provides a representation of the thermal features that defined the region for early visitors.
