Gustav Klimt painted Malcesine on Lake Garda during a summer holiday in 1913. This work captures the Italian town with a focus on the architectural density of the buildings as they rise from the water. Klimt employs a square canvas format, a choice he frequently made for his paintings during this period. This shape allows for a compressed, almost mosaic-like arrangement of the structures.
The composition avoids traditional perspective. Instead, the buildings appear stacked upon one another, creating a flattened surface that emphasises the geometric shapes of the roofs, windows, and walls. The colour palette relies on warm ochres, soft yellows, and terracotta tones, which reflect the sun-drenched atmosphere of the region.
