A detailed Rajasthani miniature painting depicting Maharana Sarup Singh of Mewar inspecting a prize stallion beneath an ornate canopy.
This work by the artist Tara depicts Maharana Sarup Singh of Mewar during a formal inspection of a prize stallion. The scene is set beneath a large, ornate canopy, which provides a structured frame for the royal court. The Maharana sits upon a raised platform, his status indicated by the halo surrounding his head and his central position within the composition. He is surrounded by courtiers, attendants, and musicians, all rendered with the precision characteristic of the Mewar school of painting.
The stallion, draped in a patterned textile, stands to the left, serving as the subject of the ruler's attention. The artist employs a flattened perspective, common in Rajasthani miniature traditions, where the ground plane is tilted upwards to allow for the clear display of all figures and objects. The surface is covered in a dense, floral-patterned carpet, which contrasts with the solid green of the grass where the horse stands. Every element, from the folds of the garments to the decorative borders of the canopy, is executed with fine brushwork and a controlled palette.
Gold leaf is applied to specific areas, such as the Maharana's halo and the decorative elements of the canopy, adding a reflective quality to the work. The figures are arranged in rows, creating a sense of order and hierarchy. The inclusion of a dog in the lower left corner and the musicians in the foreground adds a layer of narrative detail to the formal courtly setting. This painting offers a view into the ceremonial life of the Mewar court during the mid-nineteenth century, documenting the importance of equestrian culture and royal patronage in the region.
