A classic High Renaissance depiction of the Virgin and Child, noted for its soft sfumato technique and balanced composition.
The Madonna Litta depicts the Virgin Mary nursing the Christ Child. This work, traditionally attributed to Leonardo da Vinci, displays the characteristic sfumato technique, where soft transitions between light and shadow create a sense of volume and atmospheric depth. The figures are positioned against a dark interior, which contrasts with the two arched windows behind them. These openings reveal a distant, mountainous horizon painted in cool, pale blue tones, a common feature in Leonardo's compositions to suggest vast space.
The Virgin's expression is one of calm focus, her gaze directed downward toward the child. The Christ Child, depicted with a naturalistic physique, holds a small goldfinch, a symbol often associated with the Passion in Christian iconography. The colour palette relies on the juxtaposition of the Virgin's deep red bodice and her bright blue mantle, colours traditionally linked to her identity. The drapery folds are rendered with precision, showing the weight and texture of the fabric.
While the attribution of the painting has been debated among scholars, with some suggesting the involvement of assistants such as Giovanni Antonio Boltraffio, the composition reflects the stylistic concerns of the Milanese period of Leonardo's career. The work was formerly part of the Litta collection in Milan, from which it derives its name. It is now housed in the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg. The painting remains a study in the balance between human tenderness and the formal requirements of devotional art, avoiding excessive ornamentation to focus on the interaction between mother and child. The clarity of the figures against the dark background ensures that the viewer's attention remains fixed on the central subjects, reflecting the artist's interest in human anatomy and emotional expression.
