This work by Marcello Fogolino, an artist active in the Trentino region during the early sixteenth century, presents a traditional sacra conversazione. The Virgin Mary sits enthroned at the centre, holding the Christ Child, while a group of saints gathers around the base of the structure. Fogolino, who was influenced by the Venetian school and the works of Bartolomeo Montagna, employs a clear, architectural framework to organise the figures within the pictorial space.
The composition relies on a symmetrical arrangement, typical of the period, which directs the viewer towards the central figures. The architectural setting, featuring a barrel-vaulted ceiling and classical columns, provides a sense of depth and stability. The artist pays close attention to the textures of the drapery, from the heavy folds of the saints' robes to the delicate fabric surrounding the infant. Small details, such as the hanging fruit and the floral arrangement at the base of the throne, add a layer of naturalistic observation to the formal religious scene.
Fogolino's approach to colour is balanced, using muted tones for the stone architecture to contrast with the saturated reds and blues of the garments.
