A refined Sienese Renaissance panel painting depicting the Virgin and Child flanked by Saint Jerome and Saint Mary Magdalen.
This work by Matteo di Giovanni di Bartolo, a prominent figure of the Sienese School during the fifteenth century, displays the characteristic elegance and linear precision associated with his output. The composition centres on the Virgin Mary, who holds the Christ Child in a traditional devotional arrangement. To her left stands Saint Jerome, depicted with his customary beard and scholarly focus, while Saint Mary Magdalen appears to her right, holding the ointment jar that serves as her primary attribute.
Matteo di Giovanni was active in Siena, a city that maintained a distinct artistic identity throughout the early Renaissance. His style often combines the decorative sensibilities of the Gothic tradition with the emerging interest in human form and spatial clarity found in the works of his contemporaries. The figures here possess a refined, almost ethereal quality, with delicate facial features and carefully rendered drapery. The use of tempera allows for a smooth, luminous surface, which is particularly evident in the treatment of the skin tones and the subtle modelling of the garments.
Saint Jerome is shown in a moment of quiet contemplation, his gaze directed towards the book he holds. In contrast, the Christ Child looks outward, engaging the viewer directly. The inclusion of Mary Magdalen adds a layer of narrative depth, as she is frequently associated with the themes of penance and devotion. The halos are rendered with fine, incised lines, a technique that reflects the meticulous craftsmanship typical of Sienese panel painting. This piece provides a clear example of the devotional imagery produced for private or ecclesiastical settings during the period, balancing theological narrative with aesthetic grace. The composition is balanced and harmonious, avoiding excessive ornamentation to focus on the interaction between the figures.
