A delicate Baroque study in ink and wash by Jerónimo Jacinto Espinosa, depicting the Madonna and Child surrounded by angels.
This drawing by Jerónimo Jacinto Espinosa captures a traditional devotional subject within the oval format common to the Spanish Baroque period. The composition centres on the Virgin Mary, who holds the Christ Child amidst a gathering of cherubic figures. Espinosa employs a fluid technique, using pen and brown ink to define the primary forms, while applying brown wash to create depth and shadow across the drapery and the cloud formations.
The artist, active in Valencia during the seventeenth century, was known for his ability to convey spiritual themes with a sense of quietude. In this study, the figures emerge from the wash with a softness that suggests a preparatory stage for a larger oil painting. The oval frame dictates the arrangement, forcing the angelic figures to cluster around the central pair, which creates a sense of enclosure and intimacy. The lines are calligraphic, showing the artist's confidence in sketching the anatomy and the voluminous folds of the Virgin's robes.
Espinosa's work reflects the influence of the Counter-Reformation, which encouraged clear, accessible religious imagery. The lack of harsh edges and the focus on tonal variation allow the viewer to observe the construction of the image. The cherubs, rendered with minimal detail, provide a rhythmic quality to the outer edges of the composition, balancing the weight of the central figures. This piece offers a glimpse into the working process of a master of the Valencian school, demonstrating how preliminary sketches were used to establish light and form before the application of paint. The monochromatic palette emphasises the structural integrity of the drawing, allowing the viewer to appreciate the draftsmanship and the careful balance of the composition.
