A classic Renaissance devotional panel featuring the Madonna and Child, attributed to the workshop of Pseudo Pier Francesco Fiorentino.
This work is attributed to the artist known as Pseudo Pier Francesco Fiorentino, a name assigned by art historians to a workshop or group of painters active in Florence during the late fifteenth century. These artists produced numerous devotional images of the Madonna and Child, often drawing inspiration from the compositions of Fra Filippo Lippi and Pesellino. The style is characterised by a specific approach to facial features, including high foreheads, almond-shaped eyes, and a certain uniformity in the expressions of the figures.
The composition follows a traditional format for private devotional panels. The Virgin Mary is depicted in half-length, cradling the Christ Child. She wears a dark mantle over a red tunic, with a transparent veil draped over her head. The Child holds a small goldfinch, a common iconographic element in Renaissance art that symbolises the future Passion of Christ. The background consists of a tooled gold ground, which reflects light and creates a sense of spiritual space distinct from the physical world. The haloes are incised directly into the gold leaf, a technique that demonstrates the technical traditions maintained by Florentine workshops of the period.
This print captures the fine craquelure across the surface of the original panel, which provides a sense of the work's age and material history. The colours remain clear, with the contrast between the dark blue of the mantle and the warm tones of the flesh and gold ground providing a balanced visual experience. This piece represents the widespread demand for accessible religious imagery in Renaissance Italy, where such panels were produced for domestic use in private homes and small chapels. The focus remains on the tender interaction between the figures, rendered with the characteristic linearity associated with this group of painters.
