A fine art print of a late thirteenth-century Sienese panel painting, depicting the Madonna and Child in the Italo-Byzantine style.
This work is attributed to the Master of Badia a Isola, an anonymous Sienese painter active during the late thirteenth century. The artist is named after a large altarpiece located in the Badia a Isola, near Monteriggioni. This composition follows the Hodegetria tradition, a common iconographic type in medieval art where the Virgin Mary gestures towards the Christ Child, presenting him as the source of salvation.
The painting displays the stylistic influence of Duccio di Buoninsegna, particularly in the delicate modelling of the faces and the fluid, rhythmic lines of the drapery. The Virgin is depicted with a solemn expression, her features rendered with a soft, linear grace that departs from the more rigid Byzantine models of the era. The Christ Child is shown with a naturalistic touch, his hand raised in a gesture of blessing, while his gaze is directed slightly away from the viewer.
The background consists of a flat, gilded surface, which serves to remove the figures from a specific temporal setting, placing them instead within a divine, eternal space. The halos are incised with fine, decorative patterns, a technique that demonstrates the high level of craftsmanship associated with Sienese workshops of the period. The use of tempera on wood panel allows for the precise application of colour and the subtle blending of tones, particularly in the flesh areas. This print captures the texture of the original panel, including the fine craquelure that has developed over the centuries. It offers a clear view of the stylistic transition occurring in Italian art at the end of the Duecento, as painters began to move towards a more humanised representation of sacred subjects while maintaining the formal dignity of the Byzantine tradition.
