A refined early fourteenth-century tempera panel by Lippo di Benivieni, featuring the Madonna and Child surrounded by angels against a gold-leaf background.
This panel painting by the Florentine artist Lippo di Benivieni depicts the Virgin Mary seated upon a throne, holding the Christ Child. The composition follows the established traditions of early fourteenth-century Italian painting, where the influence of Byzantine iconography remains visible in the formal arrangement and the use of gold leaf. The Virgin is draped in a deep blue mantle, a colour traditionally associated with her status, while the Christ Child wears a pale garment. Four angels flank the throne, their figures arranged in a symmetrical manner that directs the viewer towards the central figures.
The background features a decorative textile pattern behind the throne, executed with precision to suggest a sense of physical space despite the overall flatness of the composition. The use of gold leaf across the background and the halos creates a reflective surface, intended to catch the light in a candlelit church environment. Lippo di Benivieni, active in Florence during the early Trecento, demonstrates a stylistic approach that bridges the gap between the rigid forms of the previous century and the emerging naturalism that would soon characterise the work of later masters.
The figures possess elongated features and delicate facial expressions, typical of the period. The architectural elements of the throne are rendered with a basic perspective, providing a stage for the sacred figures. This work provides an example of the devotional art produced for private or ecclesiastical use in Tuscany. The preservation of the gold ground and the original colour palette allows for an appreciation of the technical skill involved in tempera painting on wood. The work remains a representative example of the transition in Florentine art during the early fourteenth century, maintaining a balance between symbolic representation and humanised interaction between the mother and child.
