A classic example of the Italo-Byzantine style, this thirteenth-century panel painting by Berlinghiero depicts the Virgin Mary and the Christ Child.

This panel painting by the Lucchese artist Berlinghiero represents the Italo-Byzantine tradition, a style that dominated Italian religious art during the early thirteenth century. The composition follows the Hodegetria iconographic type, in which the Virgin Mary gestures toward the Christ Child, presenting him as the source of salvation. Her elongated fingers and the solemn, almond-shaped eyes of both figures reflect the influence of Byzantine models, which prioritised symbolic clarity over naturalistic representation.

The Virgin is depicted in a deep blue maphorion, a garment that contrasts with the gilded background. This gold surface, characteristic of medieval devotional panels, serves to remove the figures from a specific temporal or physical setting, placing them instead within a celestial space. The Christ Child holds a scroll, a detail that identifies him as the Word of God. His posture, seated firmly on his mother's arm, maintains a formal dignity that is typical of the period.

Berlinghiero was a central figure in the development of Tuscan painting. His work demonstrates a transition from rigid, formulaic Byzantine prototypes toward a more expressive, humanised approach that would later inform the work of his son, Bonaventura Berlinghieri, and other painters of the Duecento. The application of tempera allows for the precise, linear definition of the facial features and the folds of the drapery. The preservation of the gold leaf provides a sense of the original luminosity intended for a church or private chapel setting.
