Beskrivning
A 1920 portrait by André Derain, featuring his wife Alice in a restrained, classical style that reflects the post-war return to order.
Painted in 1920, this portrait of Alice Derain captures the artist's shift away from the radical colour experiments of his earlier Fauvist period. By this stage in his career, Derain had adopted a more restrained approach, favouring a controlled palette and a return to classical structure. The composition is direct, focusing on the subject's face against a simplified, muted background.
Derain uses a dark, sombre tone for the clothing, which contrasts with the pale, almost mask-like rendering of the skin. The brushwork is deliberate and smooth, lacking the aggressive, impasto application seen in his works from 1905. The facial features are defined by clear, dark outlines, particularly around the eyes and brows, which lend the subject a calm, contemplative expression. The hat, rendered in a solid, dark form, frames the face, drawing the viewer's attention to the subject's gaze.
This work reflects the broader European return to order that followed the First World War. Artists of this era often moved toward realism and traditional techniques, rejecting the fragmentation of earlier avant-garde movements. Derain's portraiture from this decade demonstrates his technical skill and his interest in the psychological presence of the sitter. The painting remains a clear example of his mid-career style, where the focus lies on form and balance rather than decorative surface effects. It is a quiet, measured study of a familiar subject, executed with a precision that defines his work during the interwar years.

Madame Derain in Green - André Derain
Artist Biography
Andre Derain
He was born in Chatou in 1880 and had originally studied to become an engineer. He met Matisse in 1898 while attending painting classes under Eugene Carriere. The Fauvist paintings are explosions of unnatural colour: trees in orange, water in violet, shadows in green. They were among the most radical works produced in Paris at the turn of the century.
By 1908, Derain was already breaking with the style. He turned to Cezanne, then passed through a Cubist phase, and by the 1920s had arrived at a fully Neoclassical manner. The wildest of the Fauves became one of the most conservative painters in France. The conservative turn brought financial success and mainstream praise. During the Second World War, the Nazis approved of his Neoclassical work. After the war, he was unjustly accused of collaboration. His reputation never fully recovered. He died in 1954.
