A portrait of Madame Bergeret de Frouville depicted as the Roman goddess Diana, painted by the French Rococo artist Jean-Marc Nattier in 1746.
Jean-Marc Nattier was a leading portraitist in the French court during the eighteenth century. He became known for his ability to depict aristocratic sitters in the guise of mythological figures, a practice known as portrait historié. This work depicts Madame Bergeret de Frouville, born Anne-Françoise-Elisabeth de Domangeville, portrayed as Diana, the Roman goddess of the hunt.
The subject is shown with the traditional attributes of the deity: a bow held in her left hand and a quiver of arrows resting nearby. She wears a leopard skin draped over her shoulder, a reference to the wild nature of the huntress. Her attire consists of a white gown contrasted against a heavy red fabric that pools around her. The composition is set against a soft, atmospheric sky and a tree, which provides a vertical anchor for the figure.
Nattier uses a light, painterly touch to render the textures of the fur, the sheen of the bow, and the soft skin tones of the sitter. The painting reflects the taste of the French nobility for classical themes, which allowed them to project an image of grace and virtue. The artist was particularly skilled at balancing the likeness of the individual with the idealised requirements of the mythological persona. This approach was highly popular among the elite of the period, as it elevated the status of the sitter through association with ancient legends. The work remains a clear example of the refined aesthetic that defined the mid-eighteenth-century French art scene, focusing on elegance, soft lighting, and a harmonious arrangement of colour.
