A sixteenth-century scientific illustration of a sunfish from Adriaen Coenen's Visboek, featuring detailed observation and period calligraphy.
This illustration of a sunfish, or Mola mola, originates from the Visboek (Fish Book), a manuscript compiled by the Dutch fisherman and chronicler Adriaen Coenen. Completed in 1583, the work represents a period of early modern curiosity regarding marine life. Coenen documented various species encountered in the North Sea, combining his practical experience as a fisherman with the observational traditions of the sixteenth century.
The composition features the sunfish in profile against a muted, dark purple background. The artist employs a clear, descriptive line to define the creature's unusual, truncated anatomy. The fins are rendered with precise, parallel strokes, while the body displays subtle shading to suggest its rounded form. To the right, a decorative cartouche contains handwritten Dutch text, which provides specific details about the specimen, including the location of its capture near England and its physical measurements. This inclusion of text reflects the manuscript's dual purpose as both a visual record and a scientific account.
Coenen's approach is characteristic of the era's transition toward empirical observation. While the proportions are stylised, the drawing captures the distinctive features of the Mola mola, such as its small mouth and lack of a true tail. The work is framed by a dark border, which separates the subject from the surrounding page. This print offers a glimpse into the history of marine biology and the documentation of natural history before the advent of modern photography.
