A detailed 18th-century woodblock print by Nishimura Shigenaga depicting the birth of the Buddha, featuring dragons and ritual figures.
This woodblock print by Nishimura Shigenaga depicts the birth of the Buddha, a narrative scene common in Buddhist iconography. Shigenaga, a master of the early Ukiyo-e period, was known for his technical skill in printmaking and his influence on later artists such as Harunobu. The composition centres on the infant Buddha standing upon a lotus flower, receiving a ritual lustration from two dragons positioned above. The dragons, rendered with fluid, calligraphic lines, coil through clouds that frame the upper portion of the print. Below, figures in traditional attire observe the event, their postures and expressions conveying a sense of reverence and ceremony.
The print demonstrates the early development of the Ukiyo-e style, which often drew upon religious and historical subject matter before shifting toward the depictions of urban life and theatre that defined the genre in later decades. The use of line is precise, characteristic of the period's focus on clarity and narrative legibility. The arrangement of the figures creates a balanced, hierarchical structure, with the divine infant positioned at the vertical axis. The inclusion of text within the borders provides context for the scene, a common feature in prints intended for devotional or educational purposes.
As a work of the mid-Edo period, this print offers insight into the visual culture of 18th-century Japan. The monochromatic nature of the print highlights the artist's reliance on line weight and composition to guide the viewer's eye across the page. The decorative elements, such as the swirling clouds and the lotus base, are balanced by the grounded, human figures in the foreground. This piece represents a specific moment in the evolution of Japanese printmaking, where traditional religious themes were adapted into the accessible format of the woodblock print.
